Self Storage Tips

If you’re going to store your belongings in a self storage facility, it is best that you pack them properly.  One of the main reasons why you’re keeping them in such a place is that you want to make sure that they will still be in good condition even though you may not require them for a long period of time. And by packing your belongings carefully it assures you that you will be able to later retrieve them in one piece.

Tip 1.  Before you put  your items in a Self Storage Facility, it is advisable that you get an estimate of the value of each item to be stored.  This can be quite handy in case you want to get insurance coverage with your personal insurer for the valuables you want to keep.  (Most policies won’t cover you for storing in a self storage facility so it may be a good idea to check with your insurer first).  Having your goods insured,  can also help you in the event your belongings get damaged whilst inside the facility.

Tip 2.  Use quality boxes and packaging materials for your valuables.  According to experts, box strength diminishes with use.  Therefore choose boxes that are sturdy and will last a long time.  Also consider buying boxes of similar sizing as it is much easier to stack them securely.  Unlike boxes with different sizes.  They can also help you save space.  Avoid using plastic bags to store items in, as over time they perish.  Don’t use newspaper to wrap your items in as often the print can rub off and stain your belongings, butchers paper is better suited for wrapping your items in & bubble wrap is good for protecting your valuable & more breakable items.

Tip 3.  All items that can fit in boxes should be boxed.  If you have left something unboxed, chances are, it will get dusty and dirty even while in storage.  Boxes keep dust and dirt out however, make sure you don’t fill each box beyond capacity as it will be more difficult for you to lift and carry your belongings.  Remember to always leave an aisle or walkway in your unit that allows for easy access and don’t forget to clearly label your boxes or keep an inventory or checklist and then number the boxes accordingly.

Tip 4.  When it comes to self storage, mould and mildew are your enemies.  Not only can they cause unpleasant odour, they can also damage your belongings.  Therefore avoid storing items that will attract mould or mildew, particularly those that are wet or moist.  For larger electronic appliances such as fridge and freezers, it is best that you defrost  them thoroughly before placing them in storage.  Otherwise they will attract mould and cause water damage.  Similarly washing machines should be drained properly and all home appliances should always be clean & dry before storing them for a long period of time.

Tip 5. When packing  your self storage unit be sure to put your smaller/ lighter belongings at the back of your truck or trailer because when you move in to your unit they will be the first things to go into the unit so that the larger/ heavier items are at the front and vice versa when you move out of your unit the larger items can than be secured at the front of your truck/trailer and smaller items at the back of truck.
